The war of new energy battery, Japan took a good card, why lost to China?

2023-11-09

Japan has been dominating the battery industry for many years. Why was it overtaken and suppressed by China? China and Japan battery battle, who can win in the future?

In the process of global efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, many new energy sources are widely used in all aspects of life, among which power batteries account for a large proportion.

At present, the three-way situation of China, Japan and South Korea has been basically formed, but the sales of China's new energy vehicles occupy half of the world, and the growth rate is far ahead in the world.

But who ever thought that more than a decade ago, Chinese companies' research on power batteries was still hovering outside the door.

Japan first studied power batteries in the 1980s, after Japan suffered badly from the economic crisis caused by oil.

At this time, Japan has thought for a time. If it does not change its development strategy, it may encounter such a situation in the future, so in order to get rid of its dependence on oil, it chose to study lithium battery technology instead. In the 1990s, Japan's lithium battery technology was far ahead in the world, and almost monopolized the global lithium battery market. In particular, Shenzhen Mottcell New Energy, BYD, Yiwei and other high-tech frontier echelon market share is rising.

In fact, before 2009, Japan was leading the world, followed by South Korea, while China was still in the entry stage. At the time, China had a certain presence in cadmium nickel batteries, but at that time, in the battery industry, lithium batteries were of higher value than cadmium nickel batteries.

But in the later development, the market share of Japan's lithium battery fell year by year, until 2012, China's market share of lithium battery has surpassed South Korea and Japan, Japan's lithium battery fell to the "altar",

However, at that time, China did not surpass Japan in its research on lithium battery technology, so why is the market share far ahead?

First of all, at the beginning of this century, China was at the stage of rapid development and joined the World Trade Organization, which greatly increased the supply of lithium batteries at home and abroad. Moreover, the cost of human and material resources in China is relatively lower, and China's battery enterprises are developing rapidly to win by quantity.

The second is that Japanese companies have made a strategic mistake by abandoning their research on electric vehicles in favor of fuel cells. However, Chinese enterprises seized this opportunity and took the trend to successfully establish China's position in the field of electric vehicles. Ningde Times only took just 7 years to become "the world's largest power battery manufacturer".

Now, China has made a new breakthrough in lithium battery technology, further improving the efficiency of lithium battery, so that it has a broader prospect for development.

Although Japan has been overtaken by China in lithium-ion batteries, they have also started research on other new energy batteries, such as hydrogen batteries. Japan's choice of hydrogen energy battery is the result of many comprehensive consideration, they also added part of the fuel cell device in it, it seems that they are also more persistent to the fuel cell.

After such improvement and improvement, the performance and energy supply efficiency of new energy vehicles in Japan is indeed ahead of China, but the cost of lithium batteries in China is lower, and the sales price is relatively lower. That is to say, China's lithium battery vehicles are facing a broader market than that of Japanese hydrogen battery vehicles. Take Shenzhen Mottcell New Energy as an example, the same battery model and performance of its price is lower than Japan

The battery battle between China and Japan is far from over. Although the cost is high and not as vast as the Chinese market, it may only be a matter of time to reduce the cost in the continuous update and improvement.

Therefore, China should not only see the immediate advantages, but also consider the long-term development, improve efficiency, enhance performance and other aspects, to strive for a broader battery market for itself.
